Weapon Glossary

These are how weapons are defined within Saber Martial Arts. These hilts, blades, and specifications are standardized in terminology across tournament settings and can be referred to across other domains as well.

(FE = From Emitter)

Standard Saber:

  • Hilt: 10-14″
  • Blade: 24-40″ FE

  • Shoto/Parrying Saber/Tonfa:

  • Hilt: 8-16″
  • Single Blade: 8-24″ FE
  • Tonfa attachment with standard hilt permissible if adhering to stated blade specs

  • Jar’Kai/Paired Sabers: (Wielding two single-bladed sabers)

  • Hilt: 8-16″
  • Single Blade (each): 8-40″ FE

  • Double-Bladed Saber: (Central hilt with a blade on each end)

  • Hilt: 16-36″
  • Single Blade (each end): 8-30″ FE

  • Crossguard Saber: (Single blade with up to two quillions)

  • Hilt: 8-16″
  • Single Blade: 12-40″ FE
  • Quillions: 4-8″ FE

  • Saber Pike/Spear:

  • Hilt: 48-72″
  • Single Blade: 8-16″ FE
  • Overall weapon length: 54-88″


    Greatsaber:

  • Hilt: 12-24″ (may not exceed 50% of weapon length)
  • Single Blade: 41-52″ FE
  • Quillions: 4-8″ (optional)


    Non-Allowed Weapons:

    Whips and fantasy-shaped bladed weapons (eg. light-axe, darksaber blades, etc) are not allowed within tournament settings. They are generally not considered combat-safe under SMA.
